NMV Feature: Gerald Clayton x Happening: Live at the Village Vanguard
Award-winning, and four-time GRAMMY nominated Jazz pianist and composer Gerald Clayton is certainly an artist that you should know! He was born in Utrecht, Netherlands however, he was raised in the beautiful city of Los Angeles, California. Gerald Clayton’s love for music developed and matured at an early through having his talents polished by his father and bass player John Clayton. In the city of LA, he attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. While attending high school he was awarded the 2002 Presidential Scholar of the Arts Award. Gerald attended the Manhattan School of Music, and also went on to receive a Bachelor or Arts degree in Piano Performance from USC’s Thornton School of Music. His unwavering desire to explore, innovate, and reinvent art is unmatched. Every note that he plays is based upon everyday emotions that he has metamorphosed into musical bliss.
Clayton recently released an incredible seven song quintet album entitled Happening: Live At The Village Vanguard under Blue Note Records. The album features musicians: Logan Richardson, Walter Smith III, Joe Sanders, and Marcus Gilmore. As the album progresses you can feel and interpret the different feelings and moods that he conveys through his music.
My personal favorite from the project is Rejuvenation Agenda, a masterpiece that evolves musically as the song quickly matures from melancholy piano chords , to high hat drums, and the incredibly attractive sound of the saxophone. This project is indisputably astonishing and totally worth the listen!
